Jaw tightness and clenching: daytime habits to notice

Many people clench while concentrating, driving, or scrolling. Noticing is the first useful step.

A resting reminder

Check in a few times a day: are your teeth touching? Softly separate them and rest the tongue on the palate if that feels natural.

Triggers

Screens, deadlines, heavy lifting, and gum chewing can all invite clenching. Swap gum for water if your jaw fatigues.

Heat and gentle stretch

A warm compress and slow open-close movements help some people. Stop if anything hurts sharply.

When to get help

Locking, clicking with pain, limited opening, or headaches that track with jaw use are reasons to see a dentist or physician.
