Night guards explained: soft, hard and custom vs store-bought

A night guard is a cover for teeth worn during sleep, usually to cushion grinding or clenching.

What they do

When you grind or clench, a guard spreads force and can reduce tooth wear and morning muscle fatigue.

Soft vs hard

Soft guards feel cushiony; hard acrylic ones are more durable and often preferred for heavy grinders. Your clinician can advise.

Custom vs boil-and-bite

Custom guards from a dental office fit precisely. Store-bought boil-and-bite options are cheaper and less exact. Fit affects comfort and how long you keep wearing one.

Care basics

Rinse after use, store dry, and clean as directed. Replace when cracked or badly worn.
